The Sugar Foundation supports nutritional census in the South of Guatemala
The Sugar Foundation -Fundazucar- collaborated in carrying out a nutritional census in which 4,599 children from 55 communities on the South of Guatemala were reached. This is part of the Great National Crusade for Nutrition in strategic alliance with the Secretariat of Food and Nutritional Security and the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance -MSPAS-.
A nutritional census helps to know the nutritional condition of children between 0 and 5 years old. Among the indices that are measured are: weight for age, height for age and weight for height. This managed to identify 16 children with acute malnutrition whom the MSPAS referred to the nearest health service. The health workers of each locality will oversee following up on the cases and supporting the infants.
This strategic alliance made it possible to contribute jointly to the search for cases of children with acute malnutrition. For this, Fundazucar formed brigades to search for cases of acute malnutrition in 13 municipalities of the departments of Retalhuleu and Escuintla.
Since 1998, the Guatemalan Sugar Industry through Fundazucar, has promoted Food and Nutrition Security and have sought to strengthen community organization to ensure self-management processes and FNS sustainability.
